Marching Band

Mr. Tom Springer: Director of Bands

August, 2009

Greetings!
I hope you all are enjoying your summer, and that this letter finds you all well. Band camp is almost here! Camp is the time to welcome our new members (and we have a LOT of them), for new leadership to step up and serve the band, for us to come together in pursuit of our common goals, and build on our past efforts. A successful band needs a monumental group effort to make it all work.
This year, we will prepare and present our BUCS ON BROADWAY show, featuring the music of Fiddler on the Roof, Chicago, Les Miserables, & Phantom of the Opera. In addition, we will of course be putting together our traditional pregame show, as well as rehearsing several stands tunes for Friday nights. I will be available at the XHS band room for Pre-game and show music pick up on Tuesday (8/4) from 10 - 11:30AM and 12-3PM, as well as Wednesday (8/5) from 5PM - 7PM. Please find some time to stop by.
This letter includes the schedule handed out in the spring and early summer rookie meeting, "must haves" for camp, as well as information vital for the enjoyment of your experience!

Parents, please take a moment to consider a role with the Xenia band boosters. We need parent volunteers! A band program cannot run smoothly without you. Parents that have an opportunity to help with an organization such as this always find it to be a rewarding experience. If you have not joined the band booster organization at XHS or attended a band booster meeting, I encourage you to do so. No band program can succeed without your help and support!!!!
If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to email me at tspringe@xenia.k12.oh.us. Information may also be found at www.xeniaband.org.

Let us make music while striving together toward excellence!

Musically,

Musically,
Tom Springer

The outside sessions will focus on marching fundamentals and drill setting. Please exercise good judgment in what you wear to rehearsals. DO NOT WEAR dark colored clothes (i.e. black shirts, pants). DO WEAR light colored clothes and a hat. Be sure to put sunscreen on for all outdoor rehearsals. Even if it is partly cloudy, you can still burn. Be sure to have rain gear in case we experience inclement weather. We may possibly be outside even if there is a light rain or drizzle. Sunglasses and a hat are important items - not required, but I can assure you at some point, you will have to march while facing the sun (we haven't figured out a way to move it yet...)! All students are expected to wear the proper footwear (tennis shoes WITH socks- NO SANDALS or bare feet) in order to develop correct marching style while avoiding blisters. DRINK LOTS OF WATER!!!! Just be smart. We want this to be a great camp for all involved!! The early afternoon sessions will focus on music for the instrumentalists and the routine for the flag corps. Instrumentalists should be prepared with music, a working instrument, and a pencil for all rehearsals. Shoes and gloves are included in the rookie band fee. Extra gloves may be purchased through the boosters throughout the season. Also, each instrumentalist is required to have a flip folder for music and a lyre that fits their instrument. These items are available for purchase at local music stores or online. Also, EVERYONE should bring a three ring binder to camp for their marching drill.

So, you should bring…

  • A WORKING Instrument
  • Sunscreen
  • Hat
  • Sunglasses
  • Pencil
  • Proper footwear with socks
  • Extra reeds for woodwinds
  • Flip Folder and Lyre
